Wainwright describes the ascents of Silver How as 'delightful'. He shows two routes on the fell and, if Silver How is the sole target for a walk, then it makes good sense to ascend using one route and to descend via the other.

However, having gained Silver How's summit, a better alternative is to do the ridge walk to Blea Rigg - at 2 miles it is one of the longer 'ridge walks'. In fact, it is odd to classify this as a 'ridge walk' as it is more of a cross country hike, albeit at 1,200 feet! The route descends into valleys and ascends over minor summits and is a joy to walk.

Once Blea Rigg has been conquered, the choice is to descend to the lovely Easedale Tarn and return to Grasmere, or to continue onto Stickle Tarn and visit the Langdale Pikes.

On this route, the view of the Langdale Valley, with Pike O'Stickle, Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes all in view, is stunning.
