Yewbarrow

Yewbarrow is one of the most photogenic fells in Lakeland. Upon arriving at Wasdale, it is the mountain that grabs your eye. It's not the biggest in the area yet it grabs your attention and simply demands to be photographed and climbed.

Ascents

The most popular route up Yewbarrow is to ascend its south face from Overbeck Bridge, which has a conveniently placed car park. This ascent is no 'gimme'. It requires a head for heights and contains moments of real drama such as reaching Great Door.

The North Face can also be ascended by going up to Dore Head, but that is a relentlessly steep climb from the Wasdale Valley. Yourknees will not love you if you attempt to ascend or descend this route!

Yewbarrow can become part of a larger climb by including Pillar, Steeple and Red Pike, doing a circuit of the valley head. For a truly huge day out, include Kirk Fell and Great Gable as well!

For the less adventurous, Wainwright lists a simpler route from Overbeck Bridge, heading towards Dore Head and then ascending a simpler grassy slope. It goes a fair distance longer than the direct route, but is doable for those of us who don't have a good head for heights.
