Height: 1535 ft. Best visited from:It depends on the kind of walk you want. For those who love arduous scrambles, take the direct route from Bassenthwaite Lake. An easier route is also available from the Lake. The easiest is via Lord's Seat, but that makes for a long walk. Walk: Extreme and hard from Bassenthwaite, easy but long from Lord's Seat.

Hint: The hard walk from Bassenthwaite should be attempted only by dedicated scramblers. Instead, combine this with an ascent of Whinlatter and Lord's Seat for a fine day out, provided the weather is good.

From the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake, Barf looks unclimbable. Wainwright lists two routes from Bassenthwaite Lake, one difficult and one very difficult!

A simpler, and more enjoyable (IMHO), route it to combine an ascent of Barf with a day out in the Whinlatter Forest, visiting Lord's Seat and other fells in the area.

On a misty day, this route is not easy to follow as the path snakes in and out of the heather. Best reserved for a good day!
